We arrived at Burnham Harbor at about 6:30 pm.  We scanned the area around the pipe and found that there were only three other guys there.  Two of them were on the west wall, so we figured there would be room for us.  The guys there said that fishing was slow.  We could tell they meant it by the look in their faces and the fact that they packed up there stuff around 7:00. The night was cold (low 30′s), west winds up to 15 mph, and occasional sleet and very light snow.  The surface temperature in the harbor was about 50F.

Like yesterday,  when we first showed up, it appeared that the harbor was cold and lifeless.  Then, the pipe turned on.  The fish immediately flocked to the harbor wall right below our feet.  A small group of small sized kings was swimming in and out of the current, as if they were trying to spawn in it.  At the edge of the pipe’s current, near the area where the boats were, the fish were also jumping.  Todd worked spawn, a small jig under a bobber, and for a short time, a flatfish.  I worked spawn at various depths from 4 to 9 feet.  I also casted a variety of lures.  Other than the fish we could see swimming, the fish had no intentions of hitting early on.

A little after 10:00,  a very big school of fish moved in front of the pipe.  I decided to go with a little more flash, and put on my gold reef runner.  First cast I had a follow.  Second cast I had a follow.  A few casts later, I had a fish on for a few seconds.  I was working a start and stop pattern, with a very long pause.  That was the only thing that intrested them.  The earlier casts were all smaller fish.  I did have a follow from a pretty large king also. In the meantime, Todd was working the pipe.  As he was pulling his spawn out of the current, he actually got to see a king come up and hit the bait.  He yelled fish-on before the fish was actually on.  After a brief battle, he had a nice small male king (see video below).

About 10 minutes later, in the same spot, I hear Todd yelling at himself for not setting the hook.  The fish was still toying with the bait as his bobber was flat on the surface and drifting sideways.  It didn’t take long, and king #2 for the night was on the hook.  After another brief battle, he chalked up king #6, for the year, on the scoreboard. We stayed for a little while longer.  We were both tired and had to work.  A few other guys showed up as we were leaving, (Bernard and others), I wonder if they had any luck.

Fish Totals:
Todd:  2 kings
Matt:  0 Fish
