Navy Pier: Perch Limit with better size
Hit Navy Pier today looking for more perch for the freezer. The reports, from recent days, had indicated that the perch were in and that their size was better (10+ inches). The recent rain had also caused the ice to disappear in past days, so access to the water would be better.
The conditions for Navy Pier this morning were as follows: 20 to 30 F, depending on the sunrise, with strong winds gusting out of the South up to 20 mph. The barometer was slowly falling. The sunrise was at 7:18 am, but the overcast skies held true daylight form appearing until a little later in the morning. The arrival time downtown was about 7:30, just as the sun was peaking over the horizon. We were once again happy to see that not many people decided to brave waking up early on New Year’s Day, the skim ice that had formed overnight, or the cold gusty winds. We set up at our usual spot on the North side of Navy Pier.
Only a little bit of breaking was needed to get through the ice. The biggest challenge was keeping the holes of skim ice from refreezing again.
The action started fast with three solid keepers within 15 minutes of fishing. We were once again armed with crappie rigs and a few different sizes of fathead minnows. After those few quick keepers, the smaller fish decided to join in on the fun.
Then, at about 8:00 am, the fishing just stopped. There were no fish to be found anywhere. We decided not to move and await their return, and return they did. We found that the best strategy for the larger fish was to let both minnows lay flat on the bottom. We also found that the larger fatheads were just not as appetizing as the smaller ones. The smaller minnows definitely out fished the larger ones when it came to the larger perch. It made it really difficult to detect the bites, but it seemed to keep the smaller ones away for the most part. At 10:30 am, we called it a morning with a limit of 15 fish each. My catch:
Todd’s Catch:
All the fish together (there were a few small ones due to swallowed hooks)
And finally, Todd’s big fish of the day:
Todd definitely won the contest today with more fish and more quality fish. It was great to get out on the first day of the year and begin the 2009 Fishing Season with a bang. Hopefully, this will be signs of another excellent season to come.
Fish Totals:
2 Man Limit of Perch (30 total, 15 apiece) with many dinks thrown back to be caught another day.
Hi Matt,
I’m having a difficult time finding a bait shop near me that stocks fathead minnows. Where do you go to get yours?
Thanks,
Frank
Where do you park when u fish at Navy Pier?
Can you walk on the ice and use and auger ?
Thanks for writing this blog. i went out jan 3rd with my 9 yr old. it was our first time ever fishing at navy pier. it was a blast. my son caught 8 perch and we kept a total of 7 between us. everyone there were real nice and fun to talk to and get advice. one real good guy gave sam his spot and his last 5 minows. sam caught most of his fish there. even thought it was cold we dressed warm and it was a really fun morning. he wants to go again this saturday morning. i think he has the bug.
thanks again

I park at one of the local area spots and walk to Navy Pier. That way, I can stay past 10 am. It is a good walk, but usually well worth it. You are not allowed to ice fish at the Navy Pier area. I do not know why, but the pier is a good distance off the water. The harbors are definately worth checking out for ice fishing, but be sure there is safe ice, because I think it is unsafe right now.
Frank,
Thanks for stopping by my site and and leaving a commment. The bait shops I go to are:
1) Henry’s (downtown) probably know where that one is.
2) Midwest Rod n Reel – It is on Plainfield road and 1st avenue just a bit west of the Hoffman Dam in Lyons (Des Plaines River)
3) Forgot the Name – I haven’t been there, but I know it is on Central, just off the I-290. I think it is just north of the express way. Hope this helps.
Thanks for stopping by. It is an awesome feeling to get a child hooked on fishing. I have a young man coming within the next few weeks (due date is 1/28) and I hope to share similar memories with him. If you need pointers with Navy Pier or other Lake Michigan locations, I may be able to point you in the write direction.
Thanks Matt!
If you ever come southwest of the city and want to find a decent forest preserve lake to ice fish, send me an email.
Last saturday I caught 18 bluegills and 6 rock bass.
This morning I caught 3 largemouth bass around 12″ and one around 14″. I also lost 2.
Thanks again,
Frank
Bye the way….I let all the fish go.
None of the bass were keepers
any luck using nightcrawlers? i don’t have access to buying minnows, and i don’t know what shops sell them
