Oconto River: Cold water and slow fishing
My wife, mother-in-law, and I had some time, so we decided it would be a good weekend to get the boat and bring it down from Wisconsin. The walleyes were running on the Fox River, something we wanted to check out. With opening weekend still weeks away, I decided I could get some use from the boat down in Illinois.
While we were up in Wisconsin, I wanted to check out the breakwaters of the OcontoRiver. The river did not fall under normal Wisconsin law. It was fishable this time of year, and we knew that the walleyes would be soon running up it. The weather was in the low 50’s with little to no wind.
When we arrived at the breakwater parking lot, we were surprised to see no cars present at such a great time of year to fish the area. Once we turned the corner to see the river, we quickly understood why. Most of the bay was still frozen, and the water was icy cold. I gave a few casts just to say I did so, but I wasn’t really expecting anything. After a little walking around and looking into the water, we decided that fishing wasn’t going to happen today.
Fishing Totals:
