Navy Pier: Perch are starting
1With the fall salmon season over, lakes forming ice, and hoops season in full blast, fishing time is very limited. Todd and I both had a Sunday morning free, so we decided to hit Navy Pier for some early winter season perch. We decided that with everything going on, we would not get up before the crack of dawn to make it down very early. We felt that 7:00 arrival time would be good enough to catch some yellow gold. Todd picked up minnows the night before from Henry’s. We started by working the north side of the pier. The only really open spots were about 50 yards down from the western corner. We were in the water by 7:15. The winds were blowing strong (10 to 15 mph) out of the east, occasionally northeast. For the first 15 minutes or so, the action was slow. Then, Todd got a keeper perch. He told me to slowly drag the crappie rig we were using (with large fatheads) across the bottom then pauses it. Sure enough I joined in the fun and got a few also. We ended up catching over 20, and keeping 9 legitimate perch. From what we saw and heard, not too many people did really well today. At about 10:00, we decided to try the south side of the pier with no luck. The snow and wind really started to pick up heavy, so we decided to call it a morning. Nine perch is not necessarily an outstanding perch day, but it was the first outing of the year. It also helps to know that we probably did better than most other people, probably mostly due to luck. Todd took the perch home to filet.
Fish Totals:
Matt and Todd: 9 keeper perch
