Random Lake: One Musky follow
Oct 19th
Kyle and I were still in search of some muskies to conclude our week of fall musky fishing in Wisconsin. We decided that we would call it quits in Northern Wisconsin, due to the turnover of lakes, and hit a lake on the way home. We figured Random Lake would be far enough south to still remain active.
We arrived at 12:30 pm, and the winds were blowing strong out of the southeast. We were happy to see other boats out, despite the ones who were leaving telling us the fishing was slow. We immediately found some green weeds off to the east of the launch and set up there.
I started with a 6-inch swim perch bait. I tried various forms of slower retrieves including a steady reel and pause, a short twitch, and more of a jerking motion. On one of my casts, about 1:00 pm, I tossed the swimbait into the shallows (less than 3 ft). The boat was sitting just outside the weed edge over 10 feet of water. As I was flailing the swimbait in, I saw a submarine rise from the depths. I knew it right away, it was a Muskie. I continued my retrieve, and the Muskie followed the lure up to the boat. I quickly let Kyle know. The Muskie began to turn and I immediately began my figure-8. The fish had no interest and began to swim off. I quickly recast in front of the direction the fish was heading, and began a jerking retrieve again. The fish quickly turned to watch the lure, but only followed it for another 3 ft or so. He then lost interest and swam off into the depths. It was my 3rd follow of the year that has still left me without a fish to show.
We worked other weed edges throughout the day, but were unable to see another fish. At about 3:30 pm, we decided to call it quits for the weekend and packed up the boat for the ride home.
